“`Bin Laden? A fucking charlatan.' 'Be serious for a minute,' Williams told him. 'I am being serious. That's my point. Everybody's so reverent about this guy. Strip away all the mythologising and hocus-pocus and what have you got? Patty Hearst with a beard. Bored rich kid playing at soldiers. He's in the huff with his family, for Christ's sake — the psychology's pitifully mundane. If he'd been born into a semi in Surbiton he'd have painted his bedroom black, got himself a Nine Inch Nails T-shirt and hung around swingparks drinking cider from plastic bottles.' Fotheringham's rant was attracting admonitory glances, more in disapproval of the growing volume and vehemence than the content, which wouldn't have been clearly discernible above the whipping wind. Raised voices were not decorous at a funeral; they suggested that your thoughts were not respectfully concentrated upon the memory of the departed, even if, in Williams's case, that was not strictly true. Nothing was more prominent in his mind than the man they had just buried or the consequences of his loss, not least the fact that Williams now had his job. Fotheringham gestured apologetic acknowledgement and Williams led him in the opposite direction to the dispersing mourners. `Bin Laden's about a lot more than thrill kills and power trips,' Williams chided, measuring his condescension precisely. 'And there's three thousand dead people in New York of the opinion that you should be taking him more seriously.' 'I'm taking him entirely seriously, sir. I just don't think it will help us if we buy into the hype and start thinking of him as some kind of formidable genius. Look at the Black Spirit, if you need a primer. Remember what a bogeyman he was? Turned out to be a fucking oil-biz wage slave from Aberdeen.' `Quite. Something, I should remind you, that we only learned after the fact. Didn't make him any easier to catch, did it? And besides, I don't think there's much ground for comparison. For all his theatrics, the Black Spirit was essentially just a mercenary, prepared to do horrific things on other people's behalf if they paid him enough. Bin Laden represents the possibility of ten thousand Black Spirits, all of them prepared to do horrific things merely because it's Allah's bidding. We've never had to face this kind of fanaticism before: there's no fifth column to cultivate, no disaffected factions to encourage, no waverers, not even anyone we can bribe and corrupt. Just total, unquestioning, homicidal, suicidal commitment to the cause.' `With respect, sir, that's what I mean by believing the hype. For one thing, there is no cause. Bin Laden's too smart to marry himself to anything as cumbersome as a coherent or even consistent political ideology, because such a thing could be debated, held up to scrutiny, and, worst of all, alienate potential followers. "The cause of Islam" is expediently nebulous.”

“A speculative early spin on the story was that their loathing of the wealthy must have become intensified during their embittered prison terms, and that - whether entirely for their own motives or willingly assisting someone else's - they had meted out terrible revenge upon their perceived oppressors murdering Voss, an international icon of arrogant, even decadent - and some would say thuggish - tycoonery. This seemed to be borne out the police's revelation that while the bodyguards had been shot (once each, middle of the forehead - very quick, very clean, very efficient), Voss and his wife had been tied up and their throats cut. It hadn't taken a pathologist to work out that Helene had been murdered in front of Voss before they dispatched him too.
It had been a particularly cruel and vicious crime, undoubtedly evidencing a heartless brutality borne of violent, furious hatred. And there had been something sickeningly demonstrative about it, thrusting its depravity before the public and forcing them to look at it. It seemed to crave their disgust, to solicit their repulsion, while at the same time its very publicness sought to rob Voss of his aura the posthumous humiliation of such a sordid and conspicuous death. Death often built legends, lent greater stature to mere men and granted them the immortality of public mythology. But murder could be insult through injury, a faultless disgrace in an irredeemable theft of dignity, which burnt the oil portrait of a proud man and replaced it in the public eye with a grainy police b/w of a withered corpse, helpless and bested no worthy foe, but some - and extension any - rogue whelp.
Nicole couldn't help but feel a sense of déjà vu as she remembered Robert Maxwell's watery demise, the unreality, the impropriety of death paying a visit to one of the untouchable Three Rs: Rupert, Robert and Roland. Maxwell had seemed a figure so proverbially larger-than-life, a looming presence in and behind the media, and a figure she had, young in years, grown used to assuming would always be there. Someone the everyday realities of life wouldn't touch, whose very irritatingness seemed to guarantee he would be around forever so you'd better get used to it, like the common cold or washing powder ads.
She remembered how the radio bulletin had sounded like a joke. Rich tycoons don't fall off boats; if they do, they turn up later, safe and sound, then write a book about it and bore us all on chat shows, telling the world how the publicity - sorry - their lives flashed before them. Even while he was missing, those uncertain hours of anxious speculation and dismal journalism, she had assumed Maxwell would be found boomingly alive, having spent the whole time enjoying the amorous advances of a short-sighted minke whale. But no, the only whale they found was the dead one floating off the Tenerife coastline, and the colossus had indeed been felled.”

“The postman had noticed that the door was ajar and had knocked on it, then pushed it further open, leaning in to see whether the occupant was all right. Upon seeing what was within he had simultaneously thrown up and wet himself, the upper and lower halves of his body depositing their damning comments on the situation either side of the aperture.
‘Postman must be built like the fuckin' Tardis,’ McGregor muttered to himself, leaving vomity footprints on the floorboards as he trudged reluctantly down the hall. ‘How could a skinny wee smout like that hold so much liquid?’
He had a quick look at the lumpy puddle behind him. Onion, rice, the odd cardamom pod. Curry, doubtless preceded by a minimum six pints of heavy. Not quite so appetising second time around.
He turned again to face into the flat, took a couple of short paces, then heard a splash and felt something splat against his calves.
‘Sorry, sir. Long jump never was my speciality. Guess I'll be for the high jump now, eh? Ha ha ha.’
Ah yes, thought McGregor. Only now was it complete. Deep down he had suspected that it wasn't quite cataclysmically hellish enough yet, but now Skinner was here, and the final piece was in place. What this situation had needed, what it had been audibly crying out for, was a glaikit, baw-faced, irritating, clumsy, thick, ginger-heided bastard to turn up and start cracking duff jokes, and here was PC Gavin Skinner to answer the call.
He was not going to lose his temper. He felt that on a morning like this, it was only a short distance between snapping at Skinner and waking up in a soft room in Gogarburn, wearing a jumper with sleeves that fitted twice round the waist. He breathed in and out, closing his eyes for a short, beautiful second.
‘Gavin, you're on spew-guarding duty,’ he said calmly. ‘Stay there. Guard the spew.’
‘Do you want me to take down its details, sir?’ Skinner asked loudly in his inimitable jiggle-headed way. ‘Read it its rights maybe?’
‘Yes, Gavin,’ McGregor said wearily. ‘All these things.’
Dear Lord, he thought, don't make me kill him today when I won't enjoy it.“

'All the organisers need to hear is that we're maintaining a high profile, so the visitors ain't too scared of bein' mugged, shot, gang-raped or ritually cannibalised to walk around town. That means more uniformed beat officers in the pedestrian areas, plenty of patrol cars on Ocean Boulevard and along the beach, all that shit. Ironic, really. Our purpose is to reassure them that none of their movies will come true - well, not to them at least.'
Bannon sat back on the edge of his desk. 'Think you can handle that, big guy?' he asked.
'Guess so.'
'You don't look so sure. Would you rather be out with Zabriski today, maybe? Let's see ...' He thumbed through some notes on his desk. 'Railway worker, laid off last Friday, walks into the AmTrak offices on Third at eight thirty this morning and deposits a black polythene sack in the lobby. It's one of these atrium deals, you know, with like three or four floors looking down on to the concourse. Telephones bomb warning eight thirty-five, detonates at eight forty-two. Sack contained a small but significant amount of explosive, probably basic demolition stuff. Not enough to cause any fatalities, but enough to distribute the contents of the sack approximately sixty feet in every direction, including up. Guy was, how'd they put it? a "sanitation engineer". Some of that stuff must have come all the way from Frisco before he syphoned it out the train. Four floors, Larry.'
'I'll just be getting down to the Pacific Vista, Captain. Got someone to talk to about this American Feature Film Market thing.'
It wasn't paranoia, Larry knew. It was plain old insecurity. He'd have been suspicious of being given this AFFM 'liaison' gig anyway, simply because he was still very much the new guy, and it might well be the sort of shit detail everyone else knew to steer clear of. He knew the scene, could see the station house, smell the coffee:
'So who's gonna handle the annual fiasco at the Pacific Vista this year, then? Zabriski? Rankin? Torres? What's that? You already volunteered to escort a Klan rally through Watts? Shit. Oh, wait a minute. The new guy'll have started by then. Let's give it to him.'

This is not the end of the world, Ross told himself.

He closed his eyes as a low hum began to sound around him, heralding the commencement of the scan. The effect was more white-out than black-out, the reflective tiles filling the room with greater light than the fine membranes of his eyelids could possibly block.

He should look upon all of it as a new start; several new starts, in fact. Yes: multiple, simultaneous, unforeseen, unwanted and utterly unappealing new beginnings. Welcome to your future.

As he lay on the slab he conducted a quick audit of all the things that had gone wrong in the couple of hours since he’d stepped off his morning bus into a squall of Scottish rain and a lungful of diesel fumes on his way to work. He concluded that it wasn’t a brain scan he needed: it was a brain transplant. Nonetheless, as the scan-heads zipped and buzzed above him, for the briefest moment he enjoyed a sense of his mind being completely empty, an awareness of a fleeting disconnection from his thoughts, as though they were a vinyl record from which the needle had been temporarily raised.

‘Hey Solderburn, are we clear?’ he asked, keeping his eyes closed just in case.

There was no reply. Then he recalled the capricious ruler of the Research and Development Lab telling him to bang on the door if there was a problem, so he deduced there was no internal monitoring.

He opened his eyes and sat up. It was only a moment after he had done so that he realised the tracks and scan-heads were no longer there. He did a double-take, wondering if the whole framework had been automatically withdrawn into some hidden wall-recess: it was the kind of pointless feature Solderburn was known to spend weeks implementing, even though it was of no intrinsic value.”

„My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer. My murderer believed in old-fashioned things like eggshells and coffee grounds, which he said his own mother had used. My father came home smiling, making jokes about how the man's garden might be beautiful but it would stink to high heaven once a heat wave hit.
But on December 6, 1973, it was snowing, and I took a shortcut through the cornfield back from the junior high. It was dark out because the days were shorter in winter, and I remember how the broken cornstalks made my walk more difficult. The snow was falling lightly, like a flurry of small hands, and I was breathing through my nose until it was running so much that I had to open my mouth. Six feet from where Mr. Harvey stood, I stuck my tongue out to taste a snowflake.
"Don't let me startle you," Mr. Harvey said. Of course, in a cornfield, in the dark, I was startled. After I was dead I thought about how there had been the light scent of cologne in the air but that I had not been paying attention, or thought it was coming from one of the houses up ahead.

"Mr. Harvey," I said. "You're the older Salmon girl, right?" "Yes." "How are your folks?"
Although the eldest in my family and good at acing a science quiz, I had never felt comfortable with adults.
"Fine," I said. I was cold, but the natural authority of his age, and the added fact that he was a neighbor and had talked to my father about fertilizer, rooted me to the spot.
"I've built something back here," he said. "Would you like to see?"
"I'm sort of cold, Mr. Harvey," I said, "and my mom likes me home before dark."
"It's after dark, Susie," he said.
I wish now that I had known this was weird. I had never told him my name. I guess I thought my father had told him one of the embarrassing anecdotes he saw merely as loving testaments to his children. My father was the kind of dad who kept a nude photo of you when you were three in the downstairs bathroom, the one that guests would use.“

«Ce fut, me semble-t-il, dans les dernières semaines de 1923 que Philippe me demanda de passer chez lui pour une raison qui ne me fut révélée que plus tard. Si je ne puis situer exactement la date, je revois la couleur du jour et le décor, l'un aussi triste que l'autre. Dans le bureau banal, mais confortable, j'étais assis sur un de ces canapés tout en rondeurs et qui n'ont de vertu à mes yeux que leur élasticité. Une table chargée de papiers cache à moitié un appareil de chauffage au gaz, et voilà le bout de mise en scène que me livre ma mémoire. Il est peut-être trop tôt pour allumer une lampe et la lueur maussade qui tombe du ciel gris pénètre comme à regret dans cette petite pièce mélancolique. De quoi parlons-nous ? Aucun souvenir... Mais on sonne. Un instant s'écoule, puis je vois mon ami revenir avec un des plus étranges personnages qu'il m'ait été donné de voir. Comme il m'arrive le plus souvent, je ne saisis pas son nom et je suis bien sûr aujourd'hui qu'il n'a pas entendu le mien. Le regard qu'il me jette me réduirait au silence si j'avais le désir de parler : les yeux d'un noir profond ne se posent qu'une seconde sur moi, mais d'une manière inoubliable et comme pour m'écarter. Je pourrais aussi bien être un meuble. Cette situation anéantissante me dispense de faire un effort pour me joindre à la conversation, et je me contente de regarder. D'assez haute taille, le visiteur est habillé d'une grosse étoffe mieux faite pour la campagne que pour la ville et les manches d'un chandail noir lui descendent jusque sur les mains qu'elles couvrent à moitié un peu comme des mitaines. Là n'est pourtant pas le plus intéressant : le visage à lui seul est comme un spectacle dont on ne veut rien manquer. Haut et dégagé par la calvitie, le front aux proportions magnifiques surplombe les sourcils noirs et les grandes orbites où luisent les prunelles d'un éclat sombre et dur. La bouche est mince et prudente, il en sort une voix aux modulations si bizarres que le sens des mots qu'elle prononce m'échappe de temps en temps. Jamais encore je n'ai entendu parler le français de cette façon. Les dentales surtout feraient croire que le bout de la langue appuie contre le palais, non contre les incisives, et les sifflantes chuintent sans retenue. Parfois le ton s'élève, les sourcils montent et s'arrondissent, les lèvres s'écartent et un rire de fausset rompt tout à coup l'ordonnance de ce visage immobile. L'impression que je me trouve devant quelqu'un a été immédiate. De quoi parle-t-on ? De littérature sans doute, et soudain j'entends le nom de Blake. Il se trouve que j'ai dans la poche le petit volume de Chesterton sur ce poète. Ne hésitation et voilà le livre entre mes doigts.“

One of those old horse-drawn carriages that have reappeared since the war stopped in front of me, and I took it without thinking twice, arousing the envy of a desperate man who raced after it, waving his hat.
That night I rode in the dilapidated vehicle along wide deserted streets and crossed the heart of the city, full of light at all hours, just as I wanted it to be, on a trip that to me seemed short and charged with beauty.
The carriage circled the university plaza, and I remember that the beautiful building moved me as if it were a solemn gesture of welcome.
We rode down Calle de Aribau, where my relatives lived, its plane trees full of dense green that October, and its silence vivid with the respiration of a thousand souls behind darkened balconies. The carriage wheels raised a wake of noise that reverberated in my brain. Suddenly I felt the entire contraption creaking and swaying. Then it was motionless.
“Here it is,” said the driver.
I looked up at the house where we had stopped. Rows of identical balconies with their dark wrought iron, keeping the secrets of the apartments. I looked at them and couldn’t guess which ones I’d be looking out of from now on. With a somewhat tremulous hand I gave a few coins to the watchman, and when he closed the building door behind me, with a great rattling of wrought iron and glass, I began to climb the stairs very slowly, carrying my suitcase.
Everything felt unfamiliar in my imagination; the narrow, worn mosaic steps, lit by an electric light, found no place in my memory.
In front of the apartment door I was overcome by a sudden fear of waking those people, my relatives, who were, after all, like strangers to me, and I hesitated for a while before I gave the bell a timid ring that no one responded to. My heart began to beat faster, and I rang the bell again. I heard a quavering voice:
“Coming! Coming!”
Shuffling feet and clumsy hands sliding bolts open.
Then it all seemed like a nightmare.
In front of me was a foyer illuminated by the single weak lightbulb in one of the arms of the magnificent lamp, dirty with cobwebs, that hung from the ceiling. A dark background of articles of furniture piled one on top of the other as if the household were in the middle of moving. Carmen Laforet (6 september 1921 – 28 februari 2004)






De Duitstalige, Iraanse dichter en schrijver Cyrus Atabay werd geboren op 6 september 1929 in Teheran. Hij was de zoon van een arts en van prinses Hamdam al-Saltaneh, een dochter van Reza Schah Pahlavi en zijn eerste vrouw. Cyrus groeide van 1937 tot 1945 in Berlijn op. In 1945 keerde hij terug naar Iran. Omdat hij de Perzische taal verleerd was, zette hij zijn opleiding voort in Zürich. In 1948 verschenen zijn eerste gedichten in de krant Die Tat. Vanaf 1952 studeerde hij germanistiek in München. Sinds het begin van de jaren 60 woonde hij afwisselend in Londen en Teheran, vanaf 1983 weer in München. Behalve zijn eigen werk publiceerde hij ook vertalingen, o.a. van Omar Khayyām.

De Schotse schrijver Christopher Brookmyre werd geboren op 6 september 1968 in Glasgow. Na zijn studie Engelse literatuur –en theaterwetenschappen aan de universiteit van zijn geboortestad werkte hij als journalist in Londen, Los Angeles en Edingburgh. In 1996 verscheen, na drie mislukte pogingen, zijn eerste roman Quite Ugly One Morning, waarin de hooffiguur van vier van zijn boeken Jack Parlabane voor het eerst optreedt, een onderzoeksjournalist die de grenzen van het toelaatbare opzoekt. Brookmyres boeken zijn met veel satire geschreven thrillers, waarin de kritiek op de Engelse maatschappij en politiek niet ontbreekt.

“The castle was falling apart, but at 2 a.m. under a useless moon, Danny couldn't see this. What he saw looked solid as hell: two round towers with an arch between them and across that arch was an iron gate that looked like it hadn't moved in three hundred years or maybe ever.

He'd never been to a castle before or even this part of the world, but something about it all was familiar to Danny. He seemed to remember the place from a long time ago, not like he'd been here exactly but from a dream or a book. The towers had those square indentations around the top that little kids put on castles when they draw them. The air was cold with a smoky bite, like fall had already come even though it was mid-August and people in New York were barely dressed. The trees were losing their leaves-Danny felt them landing in his hair and heard them crunching under his boots when he walked. He was looking for a doorbell, a knocker, a light: some way into this place or at least a way to find the way in. He was getting pessimistic.

Danny had waited two hours in a gloomy little valley town for a bus to this castle that never frigging came before he looked up and saw its black shape against the sky. Then he'd started to walk, hauling his Samsonite and satellite dish a couple of miles up this hill, the Samsonite's puny wheels catching on boulders and tree roots and rabbit holes. His limp didn't help. The whole trip had been like that: one hassle after another starting with the red eye from Kennedy that got towed into a field after a bomb threat, surrounded by trucks with blinky red lights and giant nozzles that were comforting up until you realized their job was to make sure the fireball only incinerated those poor suckers who were already on the plane. So Danny had missed his connection to Prague and the train to wherever the hell he was now, some German-sounding town that didn't seem to be in Germany. Or anywhere else-Danny couldn't even find it online, although he hadn't been sure about the spelling. Talking on the phone to his Cousin Howie, who owned this castle and had paid Danny's way to help out with the renovation, he'd tried to nail down some details.”

Because of last-minute difficulties in buying tickets, I arrived in Barcelona at midnight on a train different from the one I had announced, and nobody was waiting for me.

It was the first time I had traveled alone, but I wasn’t frightened; on the contrary, this profound freedom at night seemed like an agreeable and exciting adventure to me. Blood was beginning to circulate in my stiff legs after the long, tedious trip, and with an astonished smile I looked around at the huge Francia Station and the groups forming of those who were waiting for the express and those of us who had arrived three hours late.

The special smell, the loud noise of the crowd, the invariably sad lights, held great charm for me, since all my impressions were enveloped in the wonder of having come, at last, to a big city, adored in my daydreams because it was unknown.

I began to follow—a drop in the current—the human mass that, loaded down with suitcases, was hurrying toward the exit. My luggage consisted of a large bag, extremely heavy because it was packed full of books, which I carried myself with all the strength of my youth and eager anticipation.

An ocean breeze, heavy and cool, entered my lungs along with my first confused impression of the city: a mass of sleeping houses, of closed establishments, of streetlights like drunken sentinels of solitude. Heavy, labored breathing came with the whispering of dawn. Close by, behind me, facing the mysterious narrow streets that led to the Borne, above my excited heart, was the ocean.

I must have seemed a strange figure with my smiling face and my old coat blown by the wind and whipping around my legsas I guarded my suitcase, distrustful of the obsequious “porters.”

I remember that in a very few minutes I was alone on the broad sidewalk because people ran to catch one of the few taxis or struggled to crowd onto the streetcar.

De Nederlandse schrijfster Jessica Durlacher werd geboren in Amsterdam op 6 september 1961. Durlacher is getrouwd met schrijver Leon de Winter. Jessica Durlacher was, voordat ze debuteerde als schrijfster, criticus en columniste. Zij stelde verschillende literaire bloemlezingen samen en maakte deel uit van de redactie van het tijdschrift De Held. Haar vader is de auteur G.L. Durlacher (1928-1996), die een indrukwekkend autobiografisch oeuvre schreef over zijn herinneringen aan de holocaust. Voor haar romandebuut kreeg Jessica Durlacher de Debutantenprijs en Het Gouden Ezelsoor, ook werd het genomineerd voor de NS Publieksprijs. Ook verscheen het boek in het Duits en werd genomineerd voor de Literatuurprijs Nordrhein/Westfalen. Haar tweede roman De dochter, waarvan in Nederland rond de 175.000 exemplaren zijn verkocht, werd vertaald in Duitsland, Zweden en Italië.

Egan is auteur van drie romans, The Keep, The Invisible Circus en Look at Me, dat finalist van voor de National Book Award, en een collectie van korte verhalen, Emerald City. Haar meest recente boek, The Keep (2006), ontving gunstige recensies van The New York Times Book Review. Ze heeft ook fictie gepubliceerd in The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, Zoetrope: All-Story en in Ploughshares.

After the accident, I became less visible. I don't mean in the obvious sense that I went to fewer parties and retreated from general view. Or not just that. I mean that after the accident, I became more difficult to see.

In my memory, the accident has acquired a harsh, dazzling beauty: white sunlight, a slow loop through space like being on the Tilt-A-Whirl (always a favorite of mine), feeling my body move faster than, and counter to, the vehicle containing it. Then a bright, splintering crack as I burst through the windshield into the open air, bloody and frightened and uncomprehending.

The truth is that I don't remember anything. The accident happened at night during an August downpour on a deserted stretch of highway through corn and soybean fields, a few miles outside Rockford, Illinois, my hometown. I hit the brakes and my face collided with the windshield, knocking me out instantly. Thus I was spared the adventure of my car veering off the tollway into a cornfield, rolling several times, bursting into flame and ultimately exploding. The air bags didn't inflate; I could sue, of course, but since I wasn't wearing my seatbelt, it's probably a good thing they didn't inflate, or I might have been decapitated, adding injury to insult, you might say. The shatterproof windshield did indeed hold fast upon its impact with my head, so although I broke virtually every bone in my face, I have almost no visible scars.”

De Frans – Amerikaanse schrijver Julien Hartridge Green werd geboren op 6 september 1900 in Parijs. Hij werd protestants opgevoed, en werd na de dood van zijn moeder in 1914 in 1916 Rooms-katholiek. Later keerde hij zich daar weer van af en werd boeddhist.

Toen hij 17 jaar oud was, gaat hij vrijwillig het leger in tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Van 1918 tot 1922 studeerde hij in Parijs en aan de universiteit van Virginia in de VS. In 1922 ging hij weer terug naar Frankrijk, en hij publiceerde zijn eerste boek, Mont-Cinère in 1926. Dit boek bleek zowel in Frankrijk als in de Verenigde Staten succesvol. Hij publiceerde hierna nog een aantal boeken die verschillende prijzen kregen (Adrienne Mésurat (1927, Femina Bookman Prize), Léviathan (1929, Harper Prize)).

In 1939 werd hij opnieuw katholiek. Van zijn innerlijke godsdienstige ontwikkelingen geeft zijn Dagboek (waarvan in 1990 het 14e deel verscheen) een helder en boeiend beeld. In 1971 werd hij gekozen tot lid van de Académie française, de eerste Amerikaan die deze eer ten deel viel.

De katholieke kerk in Parijs weigerde mee te werken om zijn laatste wens in vervulling te laten gaan: een  laatste rustplaats in de Franse hoofdstad. Het stoffelijk overschot werd naar Klagenfurt overgebracht en daar werd Green vanuit de Sint Egidiuskerk begraven.

L'amour de Dieu est intolérant, l'amour de Dieu ne souffre pas de partage, l'amour de Dieu demande plus, toujours plus à mesure qu'il reçoit. On lui sacrifie ses biens, ce n'est pas assez ; sa famille, ce n'est pas assez ; sa patrie, ce n'est pas assez ; il veut tout, jusqu'à cette pauvre vie humaine qui palpite dans notre coeur. Bienheureux ceux que dévore cet amour insatiable.

Julien Green (6 september 1900 -
13 augustus 1998)


De Spaanse schrijfster Carmen Laforet werd geboren op 6 september 1921 in Barcelona. Zij was een van de belangrijkste auteurs in de tijd na de Spaanse burgeroorlog. Carmen Laforet baarde in 1944, op 23-jarige leeftijd, veel opzien met haar debuut Nada (Niets), dat niet alleen de censuur van Franco wist te passeren, maar ook werd bekroond met de belangrijke Nadal-prijs ("Premio Nadal de Novela"). In de jaren zestig publiceerde Laforet nog twee andere romans. Van de aangekondigde trilogie verscheen alleen La insolación (De Zonnesteek) in 1963. Het tweede deel Al volver la esquina (De gang om de hoek) voltooide ze weliswaar, maar de correcties ervan kreeg haar uitgeverij nooit terug. Carmen Laforet leed meer dan 20 jaar aan de ziekte van Alzheimer voordat zij op 28 februari 2004 stierf in Madrid.
